About the Country
The Philippines is an archipelago composed of about 7,641 island in Southeast Asia in the Western Pacific Ocean. Philippines shares maritime borders with Taiwan(North), Vietnam(West), Palau (East) and Malaysia & Indonesia(South). Philippines has a tropical maritime climate that is usually hot and humid. There are 2 seasons, rainy season (Jun-Oct); and the dry season (Nov-May).
The Philippines has a democratic government in the form of a constitutional republic with a presidential system. It is governed as a unitary state with the exception of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
It is a founding member of the United Nations, World Trade Organization, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the East Asia Summit.
The education system of the Philippines is modelled largely after the American education system, reflecting the influence, US has had on this country. Tertiary education is governed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). As of 2013, there are over 2,229 higher education institutions (HEI’s) in the country out of which 656 are public (29%) & 1,643 are private institutions (71%).
